What World Rugby Law 2 prescribes
World Rugby Law 2 is the global standard for the rugby ball. It applies at every level, from local club matches to international competitions. In the Netherlands, Rugby Nederland (formerly KNRB) follows these guidelines for all official competitions.

Size, weight and pressure: the exact requirements
For senior rugby (age 15 and above), the specifications are fixed:
- Size: size 5 (long circumference approx. 740-770 mm, short circumference approx. 580-620 mm)
- Weight: 410 to 460 grams
- Air pressure: 9.5 to 10.0 PSI (0.67 to 0.70 bar)
These values are binding, not guidelines. A ball that is outside these ranges, even slightly, does not meet the requirements for official match play.
Check your balls before every match day. Air pressure in particular can drop during storage or in cold weather. A gauge is cheap and worth having in your kit bag.
The World Rugby Approved mark: what it means
A ball can only be used in official matches if it carries the World Rugby Approved mark (previously called IRB Approved). This mark means the ball has been independently tested and meets the technical specifications set by World Rugby.
The mark is printed or embossed directly on the ball. Without it, the ball cannot be used in official competition, regardless of how good the ball feels or how well-known the brand is.
There is no requirement to use a specific brand. Gilbert, RAM Rugby, Adidas and several other manufacturers produce World Rugby Approved balls. The mark is what matters, not the logo.

Requirements for youth matches in the Netherlands
For youth rugby, different ball sizes apply depending on the age group. Rugby Nederland follows the World Rugby age-grade guidelines:
- Up to age 9 (U9 and below): size 3
- Ages 10 to 14 (U10 to U14): size 4
- Ages 15 and above (U15 and senior): size 5
For junior matches, the World Rugby Approved requirement also applies where a formal competition is played. For training and recreational play, any decent ball of the right size will do, but approved balls are always the safer choice if you want to practise with match conditions.

The referee check before the match
Before the start of every official match, the referee is responsible for checking the balls. This includes:
- Verifying the size is correct for the age group or competition level
- Checking that the air pressure is within the 9.5 to 10.0 PSI range
- Confirming the World Rugby Approved mark is present
If a ball fails the check, it cannot be used. Clubs are responsible for bringing approved balls in the correct condition. Arriving with a flat ball or an unapproved ball puts the match at risk before it has even started.
