Met een slee kun je wandelen, rennen of sprinten terwijl je gewicht trekt, wat een sportspecifieke training oplevert. In tegenstelling tot traditionele sportschooloefeningen zoals squats en deadlifts, bootst sleetraining de bewegingen van het onderlichaam in rugby na, waardoor je vooruit komt.

Sled-training richt zich op één been tegelijk, wat overeenkomt met de eisen van rugby en de nadruk legt op explosieve enkel-, knie- en heupextensies. Het bouwt een robuuste achterste keten op, wat blessurepreventie helpt en scrums, sprints en tackles verbetert.
